A site for triathlete parents. This site chronicled my progress towards completing Ironman Canada 2009, 14 months post partum and the ensuing juggling act of staying fit, having fun and being a parent of a baby/toddler.

Rythm?
Hannah and I have sort of gotten into a rhythm. She goes down at midnight, wakes at 5 or 6am for a few hours and then we both sleep until about 10am. Then, we go out for a walk or run with her baby jogger. The process of getting both of us ready takes about 2 hours but once we’re out the door she falls asleep.
When I get home, the minute I stop the stroller moving, she goes nuts because she is either hungry or needs changing. I’ve figured out that if I can coincide my getting home with my husband David coming home for lunch – then I can have a shower!
Book Review (books I've read since 'slowing down')
Born to Run (Christopher McDougall). A fun, easy to read book about ultra-running and barefoot running with some anthropology, morphology and physiology thrown in. Highly recommended.
Run (Ann Patchett). Nothing to do with triathlon! A story about two adopted brothers and the coindidence that brings them together with their biological mother. Quick read and quite engaging.
A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving). Dry humour, but a sad one. Very different.
Secrets in Water (Barbara Sapergia). Easy to read novel about a woman who goes back to her hometown when her mother passes away, and goes through her own personal transformation.
The Weight of Water (Anita Shreve). Another sad (depressing) book about a marriage falling apart while the narrator investigates an historical murder.
Someone to Run With (David Grossman). Great book about two teenagers whose lives intersect, and the story that brings them together. One is a girl who goes to live on the streets of Jerusalem, and the other is a sheltered and painfully shy boy.
The Seventh Scroll (Wilbur Smith). Typical Wilbur Smith - quick and easy read, borderline cheesy.
The Red Tent (Anita Diamant). A book that takes place 'between the lines of the Bible' in that it is an historical fiction from a woman's perspective. Worth reading.
The Inheritance of Loss (Kiran Desai). Beautifully written but very depressing book.
Best Friends (Martha Moody). I kept expecting more from this book and felt a bit disappointed at the end.
Current Guilty Pleasures
Barlean's Omega Swirl - Flax and Fish oils that tase delicious. The lemon zest flavour tastes like the lemon in lemon meringue pie! No exaggerating.
Triathlete Magazine - a small luxury. I can't resist the one-in-a-million sweepstakes for a new triathlon bike (even though I don't need it) so I re-subscribe every time I get the reminder
Lululemon clothing
Two tv shows: Damages, and The Good Wife. Pure escapism.
Tea - a real caffeinated tea, two a day
Aaron and Vanessa's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies - see my blog entry for the recipe, but I warn you, these are addictive. But heck, I've given up alcohol, caffeine and dairy.
My awesome husband, David!
